Through ALK's close working relationship with all major railroads, PC*MILER|Rail features the industry-leading electronic representation of current North American railroad routes and mileage. For over 25 years, ALK's railroad database has proven to be an accurate source for determining the routes and mileage used in processing the U.S. Surface Transportation Board's Carload Waybill Sample. It has also been used in numerous traffic diversion studies and in a variety of costing applications. ALK's railroad database is widely used by all major railroads and rail car lessors.

PC*MILER|Rail generates routes and determines mileage between any two rail-served locations in North America. Each location can be identified by station name and state abbreviation or by railroad industry code such as SPLC, FSAC, 3-3-3 and R260. With PC*MILER|Rail you can easily calculate the Shortest route (least distance), the Practical route (based on historical operations), or the Fuel Surcharge route for your rail moves. You may specify interline junctions or let PC*MILER|Rail choose junctions by weighing location versus gateway importance.

Key features include:

  • 240,000 miles of rail line with over 3,600 unique junction interchanges, including over 49,400 active freight stations and 709 railroads.
  • Run routes based on Practical, Shortest, Fuel Surcharge, Intermodal, Coal/Bulk, or Auto Rack routing parameters.
  • Identify locations using: City/State, Standard Point Location Codes (SPLC), Freight Station Accounting Codes (FSAC), Eastern Railroad President's Conference Codes (3-3-3), or Rule 260 Junction Codes (R260).
  • Assign custom location names to the PC*MILER|Rail stations database using Custom Place Manager.
  • Run routes to rail-intermodal freight stations serviced by truck and/or ferry.
  • Use Single Route Entry mode to obtain accurate mileage on a specific rail route, or use AutoRouter to view and compare multiple routes on alternative railroads.
  • Select junction interchanges for interline routes using the Junction Helper from Single Route Entry mode or allow PC*MILER|Rail to choose them in AutoRouter.
  • Display track ownership with color-coded lines and labels to indicate ownership for single and jointly owned rail lines.
