ALK Helps Salson Serve Demanding Customers in Tough Markets
New Jersey-based Salson offers a menu of logistics services that include warehousing, distribution, less-than-truckload (LTL) and truckload transportation. Salson counts retail giants Wal-Mart and The Sports Authority among its demanding customers and relies on ALK Technologies to keep its 350-plus trucks serving those and many other customers as efficiently as possible. The company embraces its motto, “Often pleased, but never satisfied.”
Salson originally made a name for itself serving the Northeast and later the entire East Coast. More recently, Salson Trucking, the company’s truckload and dedicated carrier unit, has expanded operations across the country. According to Pete Mannheim, IT director, Salson now runs truckload operations out of nine service centers from Chicopee, Massachusetts, to Carson, California, he said.
“We use ALK’s PC*MILER for mileage, pricing and billing at Salson Trucking,” said Mannheim. The truckload carrier also uses ALK|FleetSuite Tolls to calculate and bill tolls where called for in customer contracts, he explained.
"One reason for Salson’s success is unique expertise serving the densely populated Northeast, including New York City and its sprawling suburbs. The company is headquartered in the transportation hub of Port Newark, N.J., where it operates a one-half-million square foot, 200-door facility on 25 acres. Among other functions, the massive center serves as the main terminal for Salson Xpress, the company’s LTL unit. Salson Xpress serves 11 states from Port Newark and four other terminals located from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.
According to Mannheim, Salson Xpress uses PC*MILER|Streets, the street-level version of PC*MILER, as an LTL routing tool.
“Our LTL application has an interface to PC*MILER|Streets, so if I’m a dispatcher and I’m setting up loads, I can get a list of all the pros (sequential freight bills representing individual shipments) I want to deliver tomorrow. I can map all, or I can select certain deliveries and map just them. PC*MILER gives us a clear sense of the geography and helps us create optimum delivery and pickup routes,” Mannheim said. PC*MILER|Streets works within RoadVision, Salson’s LTL enterprise application, he explained.
“PC*MILER is a reliable, versatile application,” Mannheim said. “It’s the acknowledged standard in the industry for good reason -- it’s a good product.”
