CoPilot Product Line Case Study

“I would like to go to the event” was the request.

“This is not part of the plan” I thought to myself.

One thing for sure in Network News television coverage is ALL plans are subject to change, and it is how you deal with change is crucial.

The “event” was a campaign stop by Senator Kerry in Toledo, OH. The request was from NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw.

I am a freelance cameraman based in Detroit. My assignment that day was with NBC News. We were to join the Kerry campaign for a look behind the scenes and an interview with the candidate as he stumped through the Midwest. We would be traveling with the campaign so I was not concerned with any directions or locations.

We met in Toledo, OH. Senator Kerry was 2 hours behind schedule. Tom did not want to sit around the airport for two hours, so he asked me to drive him to the event that was supposed to be over with before we met Senator Kerry. Hurrying to my van his producer handed me a scrap of paper with an address scribbled on it. I was now VERY responsible for getting us somewhere… and fast!

I pulled out my Co –Pilot. As the impatient group looked on I entered the address. After three attempts I found no such location. My group was getting antsy. As my soundman was reaching for the paper map I was told the event was at the University of Toledo. I quickly hit the Points of Interest button and easily found U of T. Turns out I was given a misspelled street name.

We piled in the van and Co-Pilot guided me right to the doorstep of the rally. We left as the event was wrapping up. With the Toledo Airport already on the favorites list, we beat the motorcade back to the plane.

What Co-Pilot did for me that was set the tone of the day. If you can’t deal with the little things, people worry you can’t handle the big stuff. With the pressure of my camera assignment and all the technical and creative issues of television, Co-Pilot made directions to a location one less thing for me worry about.

Co-Pilot is now a permanent fixture in my truck. You can be the best cameraman in the world, but you can’t make the shot if you can’t find the location.
