Turn by turn navigation for the iPhone

Apple yesterday announced the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK, which allows for the development of turn-by-turn navigation applications.  The iPhone has had a huge impact on the smartphone industry with its transformational User Interface and the run-away success of the App Store. With this announcement it’s likely that the iPhone will soon offer a compelling alternative to the dedicated GPS navigation device too.

ALK Technologies, the developers behind the award-winning CoPilot Live mobile navigation system and EMEA market leader in perpetual-license smartphone navigation, demonstrated a version of CoPilot Live running on the iPhone at CES 2009. CoPilot Live provides a full-featured navigation experience on a smartphone, comparable to that of high-end dedicated systems, with detailed street mapping, voice directions and useful ‘Live’ services like traffic information and location tracking to help make journeys easier and more predictable.

David Quin, Marketing Director at ALK, explains: “We welcome the announcement from Apple and the opportunity for developing turn-by-turn applications that is now available.  It’s a potentially great platform for CoPilot Live, and we hope to be able to bring our full-featured, connected navigation experience to iPhone users soon.”
