I have PC*MILER installed on the Network and when I try to open the program, it looks like it's loading but it seems to be a little slow when opening. What can I do to speed things up?

There are two options you can attempt to speed up the system. One is a total local installation of PC*MILER Streets on each workstation. This is done via the cd, directly on each person's computer. The other, is to copy a portion of the data locally to each workstation, and modify a .cfg file. The directories to copy would be the \na\info and \na\datacd folders. These currently reside on the server, in the \pmw190( \170 or \180 depending on version) directory. Copy these to the local c:\program files\alk technologies\pmw190\na directory, and replace the existing. Then, open the c:\program files\alk technologies\pmw190\app\data.cfg and modify the following lines:

"LRGridDir"="C:\Program Files\ALK Technologies\PMW190\NA\DataCD"
"LRInfoDir"="C:\Program Files\ALK Technologies\PMW190\NA\Info"

To accurately reflect the changes you made. This will dramatically increase your performance over the network.

Another thing that may be affecting PC*MILER is a network antivirus program. We have had cases where Norton Enterprise antivirus was causing PC*MILER to load slowly. This is due to the program scanning all files across the network, as they are being copied down. See below for steps to disable this process with Norton. Other network antivirus programs may have similar settings.

Symantec Anti-Virus Enterprise Edition allows an administrator to do one of 2 things which will alleviate this problem
1) Turn off network scanning (leaving files base and e-mail scanning on)
2) Make exception for the server Folder where PC*Miler resides so that no network scans take place

Both of these settings in Symantec Anti-Virus Enterprise Edition are seen when you open the "Symantec System Center" (usually found on a server other than the main SAV server or on an administrator's win2000 or XP Pro workstation). Unlock the main server and right click on it in the righthand pane. This will open a menu tree where you select "All Tasks | Symantec AntiVirus | Client Realtime Protection Options". Look at the lower left of this dialog and uncheck "Network".
