PC*MILER: Updates & Patches
TECH ALERT – PC*MILER 22.1
(Posted 11/08/08)
This patch addresses users who receive a "Preferences.cfg error" in PC*MILER 22.1. This error does not affect PC*MILER functionality, everything will work normally, so you may bypass this error by clicking "OK" or download the following patch to remove the error. This error is most prevalent for those installing a Workstation Network Install.
Instructions to fix error: If you have a PC*MILER Network Install, apply the patch on server first, then run PC*MILER (PCMWin32.exe), then apply patch on workstations. If the Network install resides on a file server, you will need to edit C:\Program Files\ALK Technologies\PMW220\App\Preferences.cfg file (use notepad) after applying patch and change "Version"="22.1.0.5" to "Version"="22.0.0.5")
NOTE: You will receive the same error the first time you run PC*MILER after applying the patch.

PC*MILER 22.0 Update Tool Updates and Patches
PC*MILER 22 is packaged with a new web-based tool to facilitate user's ability to download software patches and data updates released by ALK Technologies. In order to access the patches/updates made available through the Update Tool, please follow the instructions below.
Before downloading any update version listed below, you must first apply the Update Tool Patch.
Please follow these steps to download the Update Tool Patch if you haven’t already done so as. You will only need to follow these steps once. Save the updater_patch.exe listed below to the computer(s) where PC*MILER 22 is installed and double click on the file. It will install the files to the correct location. Please note that this download includes a new pcmwin32.exe and will overwrite the existing file. Note for Workstation Installs: All server installs must be updated first before updating workstation installs. After downloading updater_patch.exe on the server, you must copy the new pcmwin32.exe from the server directly to each workstation install. After copying this file, the workstation will go out to the server and look at the preferences.cfg file to check for updates. It will not overwrite the contents of the preferences.cfg file but will need to access it. Please make sure the \App folder on the server is readable. In order to keep all of the workstations in synch with what is running on the server, simply restarting the instance of PC*MILER 22 on each workstation will perform the update for that workstation based upon what was done to the server.
updater_patch.exe
After the updater_patch.exe is downloaded and the install is complete, to access an update version follow these instructions:
- Close all open instances of PC*MILER. If you have a
third-party program open that accesses any PC*MILER component (e.g.
PC*MILER|Connect or PC*MILER|Mapping), please close them before continuing.
- Open PC*MILER 22 Interactive and in the top tool bar go to Help > Check for Updates and follow the instructions on your screen. (This step
requires an Internet connection.)
- There will be a delay after you click on 'Check for Updates'. It will then show the update files that are available. Next, highlight the item in list to be downloaded and click on 'Yes'. There will be another delay while it downloads the update's files. You can verify that the update is running by checking the Task Bar by the clock. In the Task Bar you will see a small icon as shown below:

- NOTE: For Workstation Installs, in order to keep all of the workstations in synch with what is running on the server, simply restarting the instance of PC*MILER 22 on each workstation will perform the update for that workstation based on what was done to the server.
NOTE: If updater does not work, please download our
self-extracting update file and save it to your C:\Program Files\ALK
Technologies\PMW220\app\download\updates\pcmlier folder then run it.

consistently return correct routes when the “Borders Open” option is
unchecked, even for a sequence of origin/destination pairs where some of the
pairs are International (such as between U.S. and Canada), some are Domestic

Update Version 22.0.0.4
(Posted 09/18/08)
Update Version 22.0.0.4 includes all items listed in Update Version 22.0.0.3 as well as the following items:
- The Minnesota DOT announced that the I-35W Bridge
will reopen to traffic on 09/18/08. The bridge was originally closed to
traffic in August 2007 after its collapse. This update will remove the
existing route restriction on this bridge and reopen it in routing queries.
- A new truck restriction has been added to I-95 in
Rhode Island on the Pawtucket River Bridge. The RIDOT reduced the
posting on this bridge, located between Exit 27 and 28 in Pawtucket, RI, from
22 tons to 18 tons. RIDOT’s inspections showed a need to reduce the
maximum weight of vehicles traveling over the bridge. In PC*MILER, this
bridge is now marked as inaccessible in routing queries and has been closed in
the routing network.
- On the RouteMap™ railroad tracks are now visible in
the map’s display.
- In both Interactive and PC*MILER|Connect, a geocoding issue was addressed where “best matches” are identified and at what threshold they are identified as such.

PC*MILER 22.0 Trial CD licensing fix
If you are getting Failed to Initialize or ALK
License Record Not Found, you need to download and run the file
below.
Save this file on the computer having the problem, in any directory easily
accessible (desktop, c:\, 'My Documents', etc). Double click on the file,
and hit 'Unzip'. Do not change the directory. After it unzips the files,
it will run a batch file that will copy some files over to the proper locations,
and run licwipe.exe, a utility that will fix the licensing problem. A screen
will appear that has a 5 digit 'Instance Code'. Call PC*MILER Tech Support
with that number, and we will give you the 'Verification Code' to repair
the license.
